There was a decision to not hide commands, only to grey them, as it was thought that it would be frustrating to see two different sets of commands depending on which mode you are using. So, some commands only work, or even make sense, in one mode or the other. So you can ultimately undo or recreate any part of the multitrack after the fact since the audio data is not altered. If you make a cut in a clip on the timeline, or change the volume, only the pointers to the clip from within the multitrack itself are updated in the multitrack, not the audio data on disk. In Multitrack, only the multitrack document is destructively edited. If you close and reopen, the paragraphs are gone forever. Just drop the files into the batch space, and set up the parameters you want - its reasonably straightforward. It is somewhat like opening a Word document, deleting a few paragraphs, then saving. If you can establish a Favorite (or possibly one for each) that carries out the operation you want on a single file, then all you have to do is put your files in the Batch Processor and leave it to get on with it. This is dangerous as you or overwriting your original file.

If you make a cut, or spot heal or some other edit, then save, you are saving a new copy of the audio file to disk. All compressors only work at their correct setting levels when they're presented with signals that peak at 0dB, so the first thing you do with any dialogue recorded at -12dB is normalize it to just under 0dB, and then attend to whatever you're going to do with it (like run it through Audition's Dynamics Processing). The Edit mode is destructive and is working on the data on disk. THis comes from the fact that Cool Edit, way back in the day, started with just an Edit.

Most DAW's are primarily a Multitrack, with a limited Edit mode. One is the Waveform (edit) mode, the other is the Multitrack mode.
